Introduction to Rhinoplasty

Your nose…the most important central feature of the face, affects the overall balance, harmony, and aesthetic appeal of your face. Is it too large, too small, too flat, too pointed? According to Dr. Shah, an aesthetically pleasing nose is one that fits your face with harmony and in the correct proportions.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Cosmetic nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, has become one of the most sought-after plastic surgical procedures in the US. Cosmetic surgery can change the shape of the whole nose or just a small part, making it fit more harmoniously with the rest of your face. Dr. Shah is highly skilled at making these changes while preserving and enhancing the nose’s function, ensuring free, comfortable breathing.

There are structures within the nose, namely the septum and turbinates, which affect the airflow through the nose. Dr. Shah will carefully examine the internal structure of your nose during your consultation and provide information about possible improvements. Also, during your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will first listen to your desires and goals. During the examination, he will make suggestions for nose improvements based on his assessment, your facial features, and your desires, bringing extensive surgical experience and artistic sensitivity to the discussion so that, together, a final surgical plan will be adopted to achieve optimum results for your rhinoplasty.

Dr. Shah will evaluate your entire facial structure, with emphasis on improving not only the nose, but its relationship to other parts of the face. The goal is to blend your nose aesthetically, thereby balancing and harmonizing your facial features. Many cultures in the Chicago area wish to have cosmetic nasal surgery, yet retain their ethnicity. These cultures have certain noses that patients may desire to retain. Dr. Shah will discuss this openly and will make every effort to retain the ethnic features you desire.

Functional rhinoplasty is performed to improve the internal structure of the nose and correct breathing difficulties, often caused by a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or past trauma. While many patients seek rhinoplasty for cosmetic enhancement, it’s not uncommon to also experience obstruction or discomfort that affects daily breathing and sleep quality. Many patients combine functional improvements with cosmetic adjustments, ensuring that both appearance and nasal function are addressed in one streamlined procedure. The result is a nose that not only looks better, but also works better.

Who Are the Best Candidates For a Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are physically healthy individuals, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve. If you’ve been bothered by the appearance of your nose—whether it’s too large, crooked, bumpy, asymmetrical, or out of proportion with your other features, you may be an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty. Likewise, if you’ve had difficulty breathing due to structural issues, a functional rhinoplasty may help correct these problems while subtly improving your nasal shape.

Patients should be emotionally ready for change and understand that healing takes time. It’s also important that your facial growth is complete, which generally means age 18 and over for females and 18 and over for males. In Chicago, Dr. Shah will take a comprehensive approach to determine if rhinoplasty is the right next step for you.

What Are the Benefits of a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty offers both cosmetic and functional benefits, making it one of the most versatile and transformative procedures in facial plastic surgery. Aesthetically, it can refine the size, shape, and profile of your nose, bringing balance to your facial features and enhancing overall harmony. From smoothing bumps and reshaping the tip to narrowing wide nostrils or adjusting projection, rhinoplasty delivers highly tailored, nuanced results that feel natural to your face.

Functionally, rhinoplasty can also correct structural issues that impair breathing, such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates. Patients often experience better airflow, reduced snoring, and improved sleep after the procedure.

What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Cosmetic surgery of the nose usually takes 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 hours and may be done either with you asleep under general anesthesia or awake under sedation. Most incisions are placed inside the nostrils, but in some cases, a small incision may be made in the natural creases along the sides or near the base of the nose. These heal quickly and leave scars that are nearly invisible. At the end of surgery, a cast will be placed on your nose. If bleeding occurs, a light dressing may be placed in the nostrils and removed the same or the next day. If any sutures were placed in a natural crease, they are removed in several days. The cast is usually removed in one week.*

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Recovery after rhinoplasty is a gradual process, but most patients find it manageable with the right preparation and support. You’ll return home the same day as your surgery with a small cast on your nose to protect and support its new shape. Mild to moderate swelling, bruising (particularly under the eyes), and nasal congestion are normal in the first week. Pain is usually minimal and well-controlled with prescribed medication or over-the-counter options.

The nasal cast is removed at your one-week post-op visit, at which point much of the initial swelling and bruising will have already started to fade. You may still have subtle swelling (mainly in the tip) that can take several months to resolve fully. Most patients return to work or school within 7–10 days and can resume light activity shortly after. However, strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or any activity that risks nasal trauma should be avoided for about 4–6 weeks.
