What is Ear Reshaping?

Ear reshaping surgery (also known as Otoplasty) adjusts the position, shape, and possibly the size of the ear to balance the face and make it more aesthetically appealing.

Although otoplasty is usually performed on children, we do not perform it at our office. Dr. Rajendra Shah and Dr. Samir Shah appreciate that individuals may be concerned about their appearance at any age.

The procedure can be performed on adults with local or general anesthesia. Dr. Shah reshapes the cartilage into a more natural shape by utilizing special suture techniques. The surgery is performed via an incision behind the ears to decrease the likelihood of a visible scar.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Ear Reshaping?

The best candidates for ear reshaping surgery are individuals in good health, non-smokers (or willing to quit), and realistic about the results.

Children as young as five or six can undergo this procedure once their ears are fully developed. However, we only see Adults in our facility. Adults who have always been bothered by the appearance of their ears, or who are seeking revision after a prior procedure, can also benefit.

What to Expect from Ear Reshaping?

Your face plays a meaningful role in how you express yourself and how confident you feel. A deep plane facelift can restore youthful contours, lift sagging areas, and enhance facial harmony—without looking overdone. Whether you’re seeking subtle refinement or a more dramatic transformation, each procedure is tailored to your goals to achieve balanced, natural-looking results.

Ear Reshaping Recovery

Directly after the surgery and for up to three days, a large protective dressing is applied. Children are then given a headband to be worn day and night for two weeks. The headband is to be worn at night for an additional four weeks. The purpose of the headband is to protect the ears during the critical early healing period from abrupt changes in position.*

Adults are also instructed to use a headband, though they may select to wear it only at night once the dressings are removed. After two weeks, full activity may resume, except for contact sports, which require an additional 4 weeks of recovery.*

Initially, the ears may feel numb and look flat against the side of the head. Mild bruising is normal, but it typically subsides within 2 weeks, and healing should be complete within 4 to 6 weeks.* Discomfort post-op is normal and is usually controlled by pain medication. Patients should always follow their individual post-op care instructions.
